ABC Steps, Cefn

The topography of Cefn Mawr is shaped by historic alleyways carved through the landscape for industry, now serving as pedestrian routes such as The Doctor’s Steps, Smith’s Hill, Tin Smith’s Hill, and the ABC Steps. These pathways, along with old tramways and quarries—some still visible in people’s back gardens—are key to Cefn Mawr’s rich architectural and landscape heritage.

As part of a special event in Cefn Mawr on 24th November, local painter Emma-Jayne Holmes is creating a new series of artworks highlighting the significance and hidden histories of several of these pathways, including Aunty Menna’s. Earlier this year, we invited Emma-Jayne to explore and document ‘Cefn life’—its stunning architecture, striking topography, and unique character—through her drawings. Her journey extended beyond Cefn Mawr to include Trevor, Fron, and Chirk.

Graphic designer Amy Teslin collaborated with Emma-Jayne Holmes and Sonia Benbow-Jones, using the Footpaths of Cefn Mawr map, location data, and social histories to design temporary heritage signs. Working closely with local printer ASAP Signs, Amy helped bring these signs to life.
