Sammy S

Based in the picturesque landscape of North Wales, Sammy is a dedicated  local photographer with a passion for capturing the intimate stories of those  who live on narrowboats. She has documented the daily lives of individuals  who navigate the winding waterways, bringing to light the unique balance  between personal narratives and the broader landscape they inhabit.  These photographs demonstrate the importance of refuelling as an aspect of  community and sustenance in narrowboat living.

Sammy's work is not just about photography; it's a profound exploration of  community and connection. Her strong community-engaged photographs  invites audiences to interact with the narratives she presents, harbouring a  deeper understanding of the lives of those who call the waters their home.  Each photograph serves as a bridge, linking the spectators to the subjects,  revealing a new understanding within the world of barge living. Sammy has

created an exhibition space where viewers can physically engage with the  theme of narrowboat living.

Focusing on the theme of refuelling a narrowboat, these series of  photographs provides a close up view into an overlooked, but essential  aspect of boat life. The ropes are to engage the audience whilst highlighting  this crucial process. Each photograph represents a different stage of the  process, and the different ways in which the boats can be refilled.  Photographing the interactions between the fuel boat operator and  narrowboat residents was important, as it allowed Sammy to observe the  friendly exchanges, assistance with equipment and the rituals surrounding  refuelling. The candid shots showcase the sense of community and familiarity  that arose from these routines.

With a keen eye for detail and composition, Sammy captures the essence of  living within the barge communities across North Wales. Her images illustrate  the daily practices and routines of residents and their businesses, reflecting  their resilience and commitment to a coordinated and peaceful lifestyle  among the serene canals.

Part of Sammy’s creative process is rooted in analogue photography  techniques, allowing for a rich exploration of textures, tones, and emotions.  The hands-on approach to developing film and crafting prints served as a  metaphor for the journey of both the photographer and her subjects - an act

of patience and discovery that mirrors the experiences of those navigating  the waters of Wales.

Exploring the theme of connection through both analogue and digital  photography offered a rich and varied approach to visual storytelling. Each  medium enhanced and informed the other, creating a dialogue that  highlighted their respective strengths. This further expanded the nuances of  connection in another underlying context.

By taking advantage of the unique qualities of both analogue and digital  photography, Sammy creates a cohesive body of work that visually and  thematically embodies connection.

Through her evocative images and community ties, Sammy aims to create a  dialogue around the bonds between residents and visitors, elevating the  understanding of narrowboat living. By documenting these stories and  engaging the community in artistic expression, her work contributes  meaningfully to the appreciation and recognition of life on the water.
